Adventures in vermicomposting

May 28, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Sorry I haven’t blogged lately.  I’ve been busy and uninspired when it comes to blogging lately.

So anyways, what’s new with us?

The kids are getting bigger by the minute.  Grace isn’t a baby anymore, she’s a toddler.  Where does time go?

Ryan and I built a worm composter today out of rubbermaid totes.  I went to the bait shop and bought some worms, but only 100 instead of the recommended 500 to start.  I’m hoping they’ll do ok and I do plan on going back and getting more, but they didn’t have any left today.  So far they seem pretty happy.  I’ve had a couple try to escape, but that’s normal as they like to explore their environment.  Jason is freaked out by the whole thing because he thinks the worms are trying to escape just to get him.  We can feed them pretty much any non-meat, non-dairy food scraps which should reduce the amount of garbage we have.  We’re also saving used paper towels and newspaper to use as bedding.

I figured it would be a good learning experience for the kids and it will be good for our container garden on the deck.  You wanna know what’s not good for a container garden?  Frost.  Yep, we had frost last night and it killed my squash plant and my tomato plant.  So I have to go buy new ones and plant them this weekend.  What a bummer.

With the price of gas being so high, we’re trying to stay home more, which has been working out pretty well.   We’ve got the front landscaping done and it looks really nice.  Nothing like living here for almost 3 years and FINALLY getting it done.  Now all we have left to do is to stain the deck and mulch around that so it looks better and I’d like to plant some blueberry bushes and/or a grapevine.  We’re having Jason’s parent’s anniversary party here in August, so the yard has to look good for that.  We’re also hoping to invest in a wooden swing set/play set this summer.  I’m just waiting for those end of season sales to get a better price.

The kids will be out of school for the summer in just under two weeks.  This year has flown by and I’m glad it’s over and they get a break.  One bummer is that the kids in the neighborhood that they play with are moving today and they won’t have anyone to play with.  Hopefully whoever buys their house has kids the same ages as my kids.  Either that, or they will just have to venture out a little further and make new friends.  They will pretty much be gone for most of June on vacation with Marla and with us the week after that.  So that leaves July and August to make new friends.

I’d love to post more, but I promised Jacob that we would go throw rocks in the stream, so I have to do that.  More later!
